water softeners - common problems And easy fixes
A water softener forms a vital part of your water treatment programme. It prevents scale formation which causes many problems.
Water softeners are simple, cost effective and reliable but like any piece of equipment, can develop faults.
Some faults will need a specialist to fix, however the most common faults are easy to identify and easy to rectify.

CHECK 1 – IS THE POWER ON?

The head of the softener is powered by a small transformer which can easily be unplugged, switched off or disconnected.
FIX 1 – Check the display on the head is on, if not check the power supply is on and connected
CHECK 2 – IS THERE SALT IN THE BRINE TANK?
The water softener needs brine to regenerate, which it gets from the brine tank. If the salt runs out and is not replaced, the softener will not regenerate and will not work.
FIX 2 – Add salt to the brine tank – fill to between 50% and 80%

CHECK 3 – IS THE BYPASS VALVE OPEN?

The water softener is installed with a bypass valve to allow water past the softener in the event of a fault. It’s easy for the bypass valve to be left open by mistake.
FIX 3 – Close the bypass valve and re-check the softener
If your water softener develops a fault, carry out a few simple checks before you call for expert help. It may save you time and money.
